Hon. Barry Popik Announces Manhattan Borough President Campaign

On September 10th Administrative Law Judge Barry Popik announced his candidacy for Manhattan Borough President. He is the Republican and Liberal Party candidate.
He is perhaps best known for solving the mystery of "The Big Apple". What does new York's popular nickname mean?
One popular legend gave the source of our city's nickname to prostitutes. Barry discovered the name probably originated with an African-

American New Orleans stable hand. Horses are well-known for their love of apples, and "The Big Apple" referred to "big time" horse races where much money could be won.
Track writer John J. Fitz Gerald popularized the phrase with his column "Around the Big Apple." Barry Popik had the corner where Mr. Fitz Gerald last lived re-named the "Big Apple Corner."
It is fitting that Barry Popik launched his campaign on this corner. He wants to be certain New York always remains the Big Apple, not the "Little Apple," or the "Rotting Apple" of the 1970s.
"We have a hole at Ground Zero where the World Trade Center used to be. We have the West Side Yards that stand empty.
"We have a Second Avenue Subway plan that's become a fifty year joke. Mayor Bloomberg's trash plan for 91st Street was voted down in the City Council."
He says, "New York is not the 'City Where Nothing

Gets Done.' We're the Big Apple!"
As Manhattan Borough President, Barry will make certain New York gets things done. He will support Mayor Bloomberg's reforms, greater property rights, and lower taxes.
Barry was born in New York and has lived in Manhattan since 1988. In addition to his duties as a law judge, he is a consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary.

How You Can Help

Time is running out for Barry to receive enough $10.00 contributions from Manhattan residents to qualify for the New York City Campaign Finance Board's Matching Funds Program. All Manhattan residents should contribute at least $10.00 to "Elect Barry Popik" immediately!
